Judgement Bands started as a tool I built for myself after realizing there had to be a better way.

Over the years, I have spent a lot of time in Excel reviewing numbers, comparing columns, looking for patterns, and trying to separate what matters from what is just noise. Excel is incredibly powerful, but I kept running into the same problem: it was too slow to turn raw numbers into clear visual judgment.

Conditional formatting helped, but it often felt fragile. Every workbook had its own rules.

 

Every column needed its own setup. And when the analysis grew, the spreadsheet became harder to read instead of easier.

I wanted something faster.

​

I wanted to define what Poor, Weak, Good, and Great meant for a column, apply it consistently, and instantly see what stood out.

​

So I built Judgement Bands.

Judgement Bands grew out of my interest in information visualization and my enjoyment of building practical software tools.

​

I have always been interested in how good visual design helps people understand information faster. A spreadsheet full of numbers can contain useful signals, but those signals are easy to miss when everything looks the same.

​

The goal was simple: make important patterns in spreadsheet data easier to see, without forcing people to leave Excel or learn complicated macros.

​

At first, it was just a personal tool I used to make spreadsheet review faster and clearer. It helped me apply consistent visual classifications and focus on the values that deserved attention.

Then I realized other Excel users probably had the same problem.

Many Excel users spend time reviewing columns of numbers, comparing values, looking for patterns, and trying to see what deserves attention. Judgement Bands was created to make that work easier.
